How to travel by plane with baby? Don’t worry: traveling with babies can be easier than you think!

‘How old can a baby be on a plane?

It depends on the rules of each airline. But even if the companies accept it, it can be dangerous for the baby to travel before two months of age, because the aircraft is a closed place and the baby has not yet developed sufficient immunity or has not had all the vaccinations.

Do children pay for the plane ticket?

Many airlines transport children up to two years old without charging the baby’s air ticket – in the case of charges, the value refers to 10% of the ticket price.

For this, however, the child must be held in the lap of the parents, guardians or an accompanying person over 12 years of age (in this case, both accompanied by a responsible person over 18 years of age).

Are babies entitled to baggage on the plane?

Babies are only entitled to baggage on the plane if the airline ticket and seat are purchased. Otherwise, parents are entitled to take only one stroller without counting luggage.

The cart can be used until the moment before boarding, but then it must be taken by the airline inspectors to the baggage compartment to be checked.

Baby Comfort on the plane or nursing pillow: what to bring?

A tip to carry your baby in a comfortable way, even on your lap, is to take a breastfeeding pillow with you, to accommodate him in the best way possible.

Can you take the baby comfortably on the plane?

Yes, but to bring your own Baby Comfort, you must pay for the extra seat you are going to use, that is: you must pay for the baby’s air ticket.

Depending on the airline and your baby’s weight, you may be able to request a crib for the flight, just check availability and place your order before boarding, as it is not possible to book in advance.

Tips for more comfortable boarding and flying:

Be the last to board if possible. If you’re traveling with a companion, let them board the priority queue and settle their bags in time while you and baby wait for all passengers to board. This way you avoid being restricted to your seat too soon and irritating the baby even before the flight takes off.

Carry a masking tape in your bag to cover your seat lanterns in case the lights are on for too long.

Children’s hand luggage: what to bring?

Extra diapers, as well as changes of clothes, powdered milk, water, fruit or any other type of food that your baby is already used to are just some of the welcome items in a child’s handbag.

Some countries do not allow the transport of baby food, so for international travel, check the rules for carry-on luggage.

Remember that the more practical your cabin bag, the easier it will be to carry your baby and accommodate him on the plane.

Suitcase with baby: what to bring?

Some airlines offer a higher baggage allowance for those traveling abroad with children under 2 years old.

It is worth finding out about it as soon as you purchase your tickets, as it will be possible to take an extra suitcase weighing up to 10 kg, for example.

Remember to check the weather forecast for the city you are going to.

Detachable prams are the best options for those who want to travel with babies up to 2 years old. Take it on your trip, but protect it with a bag so it doesn’t get damaged during transport.

Carry baby food and diapers just for the trip and leave to buy more of these items when you arrive at your destination. The lighter your luggage, the easier it will be to carry your baby.

To make it easier, purchase a kangaroo/sling, which can ensure greater comfort during connections, for example, and even during tours.

In-flight breastfeeding

If your baby is still breastfeeding, don’t be shy about breastfeeding him on the plane whenever necessary! But if you feel uncomfortable with the situation, you can take:

  • a blanket or blanket to cover yourself while breastfeeding,
  • or a bottle with breast milk – remembering to take only the amount needed for the duration of the flight.

And for babies who take formula, can you take the powdered milk on the plane? On domestic flights, they are generally less complicated with powdered milk. But to make sure you don’t have any problems, check with your airline before your flight. They may be able to deliver the milk to you on the plane.

For short flights, feed the child before boarding and you won’t have to worry about it during the trip.

Tip: breastfeeding the baby (from the breast or bottle) during takeoff and landing or giving a pacifier alleviates the discomfort of pressure in the ear. Suction relieves the discomfort.

How to change baby’s diapers on the plane?

Talk to the flight attendants as soon as you board so the crew can help you if needed.

Some planes have a baby changing room, but this is not always the case. If necessary, don’t hesitate to change your baby’s diaper in the chair, as the bathroom on an airplane doesn’t make it easy to change.

Remember to correctly dispose of the dirty diaper, to ensure your comfort, that of the baby and other passengers.

These are the main information that should be taken into account by anyone traveling with babies!
