Chocolate is a gift that carries multiple messages. It refers to love and affection and thus is widely used both to celebrate moments of joy and to provide comfort in difficult times or even accompany apologies.

At the same time, chocolate also symbolizes passion and sensuality and is used to demonstrate desire and attraction. All these sides of chocolate make it one of the most traditional gifts.

Chocolate is a hit as a gift because:

  • 1. It is a delight to eat alone or with your loved one.
  • 2. It is universal, it pleases men and women of any age.
  • 3. It is one of the few foods that represents love and affection.
  • 4. Fits in any budget.
  • 5. It is the ideal complement to other gifts such as flowers and wine.
  • 6. It’s a gift that never goes out of style.
  • 7. It’s healthy because it’s a source of flavonoids, magnesium, phosphorus and tryptophan (if you choose the bitterer versions and don’t overdo it!).
  • 8. It has a reputation for being an aphrodisiac.

Who joined chocolate to Valentine’s Day?

It was Richard Cadbury in the 1840s, Cupid’s golden age, when it was fashionable to show love by sending elaborate cards and gifts. He had developed new chocolates and decided to sell them in heart-shaped boxes decorated with roses and cupids that he designed himself.

After eating the chocolates, the boxes were used to store the souvenirs of that passion. It was a total success, so much so that some of these boxes are still collector’s items.

As everything that is successful ends up influencing the industry, the good news for us, who love chocolate, is that every year more new products appear in stores at this time. Yay!
