It tells the story of Starr Carter, a black girl who witnesses the murder of her best friend, Khalil, by a white police officer. She is taken to court as a witness, since she was the only person present at the crime scene. Under threats and blackmail, Starr is willing to tell the truth to honor his friend. The book received a film adaptation in December 2018, but the book was published in February 2017.

The Woman in the Window, by A.J. Finn

“The Woman in the Window” is another incredible book that has been on the New York Times bestseller list for 67 weeks. Published in 2018, the book tells the story of a woman, Anna Fox, who lives alone, drinks and takes medication without prescription. Separated from her husband and daughter and suffering from a phobia that keeps her reclusive, her life changes when a new family moves into the house across the park. Anna is obsessed with that perfect life until one night, snooping with her camera, she witnesses something that changes everything. The story received a film adaptation, with actress Amy Adams playing the character Anna Fox.

 

One of Us is Lying, by Karen M. McManus

A veteran title on the New York Times bestseller list is “One of Us is Lying”, published in May 2017. On the list 132 weeks ago, the young adult thriller tells the story of five students who enter detention: Bronwyn, the genie; Addy, the princess of the spring dance; Nate, the felon on probation for drug trafficking; Cooper, the star of the baseball team; and Simon, the creator of the school’s most famous gossip app. However, Simon ends up dead before the end of the detention, in a murder, according to investigators. Thus, the other four students are suspected of the crime. Who’s lying?

Too Much and Never Enough: How my family created the world’s most dangerous man, by Mary L. Trump

The surname of the writer of this book gives a little of its essence: it is a biography about the family of the President of the United States, Donald Trump. Mary Trump is a psychologist and the president’s only niece. Through her account of her own family, she explains how this scenario created the figure of Donald Trump. The book has just been released, on July 14, 2020, but it is already in the third consecutive week on the list of the best sellers of ‘The New York Times’.

The Vanishing Half: A Novel, by Brit Bennett

Another story about maturity, this time written by Brit Bennett, a writer who was also successful with the book “As mothers”. “The vanishing half” is the author’s most recent book. It was published in early June, but it soon made it onto the ‘The New York Times’ bestseller list. On the list for nine weeks, the book tells the story of the twin sisters Vigne, who in their teens tried to escape the black community in the United States from which they were born. As adults, each lives a different life. One lives with her black daughter in the same community, while the other is married to a white man, who knows nothing about her past. However, despite the differences, the sisters have their destinies intertwined, as well as their daughters. There is still no translation of the book into Portuguese, but this is definitely a title that you should pay attention to.

The Nickel Boys, by Colson Whitehead

“The Nickel Boys” is definitely a title you should read this year. Winner of the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for Best Fiction, the book tells the story of Elwood Curtis, a dreamer and follower of Martin Luther King. The black boy is sentenced to a reformatory called Nickel, where students are abused and beaten. The tension between Elwood’s ideals and the skepticism of Turner, his friend, leads them to a decision whose repercussions will echo for decades. They have two options: to run away or end up in the cemetery where the other boys who tried to do something against the reformatory authorities meet.

Where the Crawdads Sing, by Delia Owens

Since its publication, in August 2018, “Where the Crawdads Sing” has starred in the lists of the best-selling books in the United States, as well as being on the bestsellers list of ‘The New York Times’. The book tells the story of Kya, ‘the swamp girl,’ as the city used to call her, who lived a terrible childhood under her father’s abuse and the abandonment of her mother and siblings. When two boys from the city decide to get to know her better, the unexpected happens, and one of them is found dead. This incredible training and mystery book will hold you from start to finish.

The Order, by Daniel Silva

For those who like mystery and suspense, Daniel Silva is on the list of the best sellers of ‘The New York Times’. “The Order” was just published, in July 2020, and still has no translation into Portuguese, but it is the 20th book in the detective Gabriel Allon’s series. In the book, the detective’s family vacation is interrupted by a mystery he needs to solve: the murder of the pope.

The Nightingale, by Kristin Hannah

The story of Kristin Hannah’s book takes place in France in 1939, in the middle of the Second World War. Vianne Mauriac says goodbye to her husband who goes to the front. However, she must survive in a city that is invaded to protect her family at any cost. Isabelle, Vianne’s sister, is a defiant girl who falls in love with a guerrilla and joins the Resistance. Thus, this book tells the story of the women who participated in the war, each in its own way, and celebrates the strength of these warriors.

Little Fires Everywhere, by Celeste Ng

“Little Fires Everywhere”, by Celeste Ng, remains constant in the American newspaper’s list of best sellers. The book tells the story of two families: that of a nomadic artist who lives with her daughter and that of the wealthy family of a journalist and a lawyer with four children. Their lives are intertwined when the artist with a mysterious past moves to Shaker Heights, the planned city in Ohio, and they have to live with their differences. Celeste Ng’s novel received a television adaptation for Amazon’s streaming, but you should definitely check out the written work.
